Trucking Company to Pay Driver $60,000 in Religious Accommodation Settlement

A California trucking company will pay $60,000 to settle a federal religious discrimination lawsuit involving a truck driver's request to attend Sunday church services.

According to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the driver normally worked a weekday route between Reno and Tonopah, Nevada. He temporarily agreed to work Sundays after another driver left but requested an accommodation so he could continue attending church.

The EEOC alleged the company continued scheduling him for Sundays even after hiring another driver. The case ended in a settlement that includes $60,000 in back pay and compensatory damages.

The company must also update its religious-accommodation policies, provide employee training and report compliance to the EEOC under a 2.5-year consent decree.
