Trump Weighs Diesel Export Ban as Europe Warns of Supply Risk

President Donald Trump says his administration is “very seriously” considering restrictions on U.S. diesel exports as high fuel prices continue to pressure truckers, farmers and other diesel-dependent industries.

The idea could keep more diesel inside the United States, but the impact is far from certain. U.S. officials are examining both full and partial restrictions, while analysts warn that a complete ban could reduce refinery production and affect gasoline supplies.

Europe is already raising concerns. U.S. diesel shipments to Europe have climbed to about 360,000 barrels per day this quarter as supplies from Russia and the Middle East have fallen. European officials say disrupting those shipments could hurt markets on both sides of the Atlantic.

No export ban has been announced. The administration is still considering its options, including possible voluntary restrictions by U.S. refiners.
