Schneider CEO Says Trucking Capacity Is Starting to Disappear

The trucking market may be entering a major shift. Schneider National CEO Jim Filter says tighter enforcement is beginning to remove drivers and capacity that entered the long-haul market in recent years.

Speaking at the Morgan Stanley Laguna Conference, Filter said roughly 50,000 drivers entered long-haul trucking in a relatively short period. He pointed to weaknesses in entry-level driver training, immigration-related workforce growth and questionable ELD practices as factors that helped expand capacity.

Now, that pressure may be reversing. Schneider CFO Darrell Campbell said stronger enforcement of driver-training and ELD requirements could continue removing capacity from the market into 2027.

And shippers are noticing. Filter said some customers are already contacting Schneider because they are worried about whether enough carriers will be available to move their freight.
