Cargo Theft Survey Finds 40% Report Annual Losses of at Least $1 Million

Cargo theft is creating major losses for some businesses, according to a new SmartSense by Digi survey of 150 U.S. loss-prevention and organized retail crime professionals.

Forty percent of respondents reported annual cargo-theft losses of at least $1 million, while 28% reported losses exceeding $2 million. The survey was conducted by Coleman Parkes in August 2026.

Respondents were most concerned about fraudulent pickups and carrier impersonation at 78%, followed by GPS jamming or spoofing at 71%, trailer theft at 66% and double brokering at 64%.

The survey represents the views of 150 professionals and should not be interpreted as representing the entire U.S. trucking or freight industry.
