Washington Truck Chain Rule Starts November 1

Truck drivers traveling through Washington State need to check their tire chains.

Starting November 1, 2026, vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) over 10,000 pounds must carry chains on certain highways, including parts of I-90 and I-82.

The requirement applies even when roads are clear and no chain signs are posted.

Trucks must also carry at least two extra chains in case chains break or road conditions get worse.

The annual requirement runs through April 1, 2027.

What This Means for CDL Drivers

If you drive through Washington mountain passes, check your chains before leaving.

This is an existing seasonal rule, not a new law. Drivers may have to install chains when road signs require them.
