New Big Rig Orders Drop 7%

By CDLCrewEditorial standards

Truck buyers are being careful.

ACT Research reported on October 20, 2026, that North American Class 8 truck orders fell in September.

Companies placed 19,172 orders for new Class 8 trucks.

That's 7% fewer than in September 2025.

Why are companies holding back?

One reason is uncertainty about EPA rules for 2027 truck engines.

Trucking companies want to know what the new engines will cost and what rules they must meet before placing big orders.

ACT Research says some manufacturers also haven't fully opened their order books for 2027 trucks.

Meanwhile, orders for smaller Class 5–7 commercial trucks increased 27% from a year earlier.

What This Means for CDL Drivers

Some carriers are waiting before buying new big rigs.

If you're planning to buy a new truck, keep an eye on the 2027 engine rules and equipment prices.

Fewer truck orders do not automatically mean fewer freight loads.
