West Virginia Allows Red Diesel

West Virginia has announced temporary diesel fuel relief.

On October 20, 2026, Governor Patrick Morrisey declared a 60-day state of emergency covering all 55 counties.

The governor signed an executive order temporarily suspending state penalties for using red-dyed diesel fuel on public highways.

Red-dyed diesel is normally used in off-road equipment and is generally cheaper than regular highway diesel.

According to the governor's office, the temporary relief could save businesses and drivers 20.5 cents per gallon.

For a truck purchasing 200 gallons, that could mean $41 in savings.

The order took effect immediately on October 20 and will remain in effect for up to 60 days unless ended earlier.

West Virginia's motor fuel excise tax and commercial vehicle safety inspections remain in effect.

What This Means for CDL Drivers

Truck drivers and owner-operators operating in West Virginia may benefit from lower fuel costs under the temporary relief.

However, the order does not eliminate all fuel taxes or remove normal truck safety requirements.

Drivers should verify the applicable fuel rules before using dyed diesel.
