Toyota Tests 8-Minute Hydrogen Refueling

Toyota is making progress with hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks.

On October 20, 2026, Toyota Motor North America announced that it had installed two mobile hydrogen fueling devices at its North American Parts Center California.

The equipment is intended to support fuel cell trucks hauling freight between the Port of Los Angeles and Ontario, California.

Toyota also reported successful high-flow hydrogen fueling tests conducted with the National Laboratory of the Rockies.

During testing, engineers demonstrated that Toyota-powered heavy-duty trucks could be refueled in approximately eight minutes for a range of up to 450 miles.

Toyota expects production trucks using its fuel cell technology to begin commercial highway operations in 2027.

A permanent hydrogen station is also planned at the California facility. It is not yet open to the public.

What This Means for CDL Drivers

Hydrogen trucks could become another option for port and regional freight transportation.

However, the eight-minute refueling result comes from testing. It does not mean that every hydrogen truck can already refuel that quickly at public stations.
