Philadelphia Port Announces $837 Million Expansion to Handle More Freight

The Port of Philadelphia is preparing for a major expansion. On October 13, 2026, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro announced more than $837 million in public and private investment for PhilaPort.

The project includes $371.5 million in state funding, at least $200 million in private investment, and $266 million in federal support.

Plans include a new 2,000-foot berth at Southport Marine Terminal, additional space for cargo operations, and new cargo-handling equipment.

Once completed, the improvements are expected to increase container capacity by 122% and vehicle-handling capacity by 18%.

What This Means for CDL Drivers

The expansion could bring more container and vehicle-hauling opportunities to truck drivers in the Philadelphia area.

More cargo moving through the port may increase demand for local and regional trucking services. However, the additional freight is expected over time, not immediately.

No new CDL rules or driver requirements were announced.
