New Warning Lights for Truck Trailers?

By CDLCrewEditorial standards

Getting hit from behind is a serious danger.

FMCSA is reviewing a new warning light system for trucks and trailers.

On October 20, 2026, the agency released new details about the system developed by Grote Industries.

Here's how it works.

A radar watches vehicles approaching from behind.

If a vehicle gets too close too quickly, special amber warning lights flash for up to four seconds.

The goal is to warn the approaching driver before a crash happens.

Grote says the system works automatically. The truck driver doesn't need to press anything.

The company wants permission to use these lights on commercial trucks and trailers.

FMCSA is asking for public comments until November 19, 2026.

What This Means for CDL Drivers

These lights could help reduce rear-end crashes.

But FMCSA hasn't approved the system yet.

No new equipment is required.
