IRS Keeps Truck Driver Meal Per Diem at $80

Truck drivers can continue using the $80 daily meal rate.

The IRS has kept the special meals and incidental expenses rate for transportation workers at $80 per day within the continental United States and $86 per day for travel outside the continental U.S.

The rates apply to qualifying travel away from home for transportation workers, including eligible truck drivers subject to Department of Transportation hours-of-service limits.

Qualifying transportation workers can generally deduct 80% of eligible meal expenses instead of the standard 50% limit. The new federal per diem period began October 1.
