Fake Freight Broker Tries to Steal $273,000 Seafood Shipment in New Jersey

Police in North Arlington, New Jersey, stopped an attempted cargo theft on October 3 after a truck driver was tricked into diverting a refrigerated shipment to an unauthorized location.
According to police, the driver received phone calls and text messages from someone pretending to represent the freight broker handling the load. The caller instructed the driver to deliver part of the shipment to North Arlington for transfer to another truck.
When the driver arrived, two individuals began moving pallets of frozen seafood into a box truck. Police responded to suspicious activity and discovered that the person giving instructions had no connection to the legitimate broker.
Officers recovered approximately 29,000 pounds of frozen seafood valued at more than $273,000 and arrested two suspects. The incident highlights the importance of verifying unexpected delivery changes directly with a trusted dispatcher or freight broker.
