Self-driving truck developers now have access to California roads that were previously closed to heavy autonomous vehicles.
Aurora, Kodiak and other companies have received permits to begin testing with human safety drivers. California’s phased program requires extensive mileage and safety reviews before companies can advance to fully driverless testing or commercial operations.
The Teamsters are challenging the new rules in court, arguing that regulators have not fully addressed safety concerns, economic effects, and the potential loss of professional driving jobs.
