Schneider Moves More Freight to Rail

By CDLCrewEditorial standards

Schneider National is making a big change to its freight transportation network.

On October 29, 2026, Schneider and Norfolk Southern announced a new agreement to expand rail and truck transportation across the eastern United States.

Schneider plans to make Norfolk Southern its primary rail partner in the eastern U.S.

The company has about 26,800 containers and 23,900 chassis. Its own CDL drivers handle most of the truck trips between rail terminals and customers.

Norfolk Southern operates a railroad network across 22 states. The companies also plan to improve truck access, lighting, parking areas, and equipment at several terminals.

Their goal is to move more long-distance freight using trains instead of relying only on trucks.

No exact date for the full transition was announced.

What This Means for CDL Drivers

Some long-distance loads that normally move by truck could eventually move by train.

At the same time, more containers on trains could create additional short-distance trucking work between rail terminals, warehouses, and customers.

But the companies have not announced specific driver layoffs or new hiring numbers.
