Oregon Changes Truck Mileage Tax

Oregon is preparing major changes to its Weight-Mile Tax system for commercial trucks.
Starting July 1, 2027, the state will reduce its tax tables from 85 to just 10. The tax will be calculated using the truck's registered weight listed on its cab card.
Carriers renewing their 2027 registrations are encouraged to submit paperwork by November 30, 2026, to avoid processing delays.
Under the new system, a temporary weight increase can affect taxes for an entire reporting period.
For example, if a truck normally operates at 80,000 pounds but temporarily increases its registered weight to 90,000 pounds, the higher tax rate may apply to all miles during that month or quarter.
What This Means for CDL Drivers
Owner-operators and trucking companies operating in Oregon should carefully select their registered truck weights.
A temporary increase could lead to higher mileage taxes than expected.
Carriers will also need to complete a one-time weight confirmation in spring 2027.
