New York State Police carried out a special enforcement operation in late July. The main goal was to prevent commercial trucks from hitting low bridges.
Troopers inspected 348 commercial vehicles. They found 966 violations, including five cases involving trucks that were too tall for certain roads.
Police also placed 126 commercial vehicles out of service because of safety problems. Another 189 traffic tickets were given for issues such as speeding, seat belt violations, cellphone use, and problems with licenses or registration.
New York State Police said more than 375 bridge strikes have happened on the Thruway system during the past five years.
For truck drivers, police are reminding everyone to know the height of their truck and check the route before driving. A wrong route can send an over-height truck toward a low bridge.
