New York Police Step Up Move Over Law Checks

Police in New York are increasing traffic enforcement from November 2 through November 6, 2026.

New York State Police, the Department of Transportation, and the Thruway Authority announced the special campaign to protect people working along highways.

Officers will focus on drivers who fail to follow the Move Over Law.

In New York, this law protects more than police cars, ambulances, and tow trucks.

It also covers ordinary vehicles stopped on the shoulder of controlled-access highways, even when their emergency lights are not flashing.

Drivers must slow down and move over when it is safe.

If changing lanes is not safe, drivers must reduce speed and proceed carefully.

The law already exists. This campaign means increased enforcement, not a new rule.

What This Means for CDL Drivers

If you're driving a semi-truck through New York, watch for vehicles stopped along the highway.

Move over when you can do so safely. If you cannot, slow down and be especially careful.

Police will be paying extra attention to violations during the campaign.
