FMCSA Extends CDL Waiver for Veterans
Good news for military drivers and veterans who want to get a CDL!
On October 30, 2026, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) extended a special CDL waiver for current and former military service members.
Under this waiver, eligible military drivers can use qualifying experience from the past two years instead of just one year when applying for certain CDL testing exemptions.
Depending on their military experience and state requirements, qualified applicants may be able to skip the CDL skills test or certain written tests.
Active-duty military members may also apply for a CDL in the state where they are stationed, even if they officially live in another state.
The waiver is effective from October 30, 2026, through January 29, 2027.
What This Means for CDL Drivers
Military members and veterans with experience driving heavy military vehicles may have an easier path to civilian trucking jobs.
But the waiver does not automatically give anyone a CDL. Applicants still need to meet the requirements, provide proof of military driving experience, and follow their state's application process.
