U.S. Diesel Prices Drop 18.3 Cents in One Week but Remain High

The average U.S. on-highway diesel price fell to $6.199 per gallon in the latest weekly report from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), released October 6, 2026.

Diesel prices dropped 18.3 cents from the previous week's average of $6.382 per gallon. Despite the decline, diesel remains $2.488 per gallon more expensive than a year earlier.

The Midwest recorded a 24-cent decrease, bringing its average diesel price to $6.286 per gallon. California remains one of the most expensive markets, with diesel averaging $8.082 per gallon.

For independent truck drivers and small trucking companies, fuel remains a major operating expense. The latest price decline provides some relief, but diesel costs are still significantly higher than last year.
