30 Years for Deadly Truck Smuggling
A Guatemalan man has been sentenced to 30 years in federal prison for his role in a human smuggling operation that left 53 people dead inside a tractor-trailer in Texas.
Rigoberto Ramon Miranda-Orozco, 39, helped organize the illegal transportation of migrants through Guatemala, Mexico, and the United States.
On June 27, 2022, a tractor-trailer carrying 64 people traveled approximately 156 miles from Laredo to San Antonio in temperatures around 90°F.
The trailer had no working air conditioning. Fifty-three people died, and 11 others were injured.
Miranda-Orozco was not the truck driver. He helped arrange transportation and accommodations for the migrants.
The U.S. Department of Justice announced his sentence on October 20, 2026.
