North Carolina Investigates 31 Gas Stations

Are drivers really getting cheaper diesel?

North Carolina is investigating 31 gas stations after customers complained that fuel prices may not reflect the state's temporary fuel tax suspension.

On October 30, 2026, Attorney General Jeff Jackson announced that his office had started contacting the stations and requesting explanations of their prices.

North Carolina suspended its 41-cent-per-gallon tax on gasoline and diesel from October 10 through November 30.

Under state law, those savings must be passed along to customers.

But some drivers complained that stations were not lowering their prices as expected.

The state has sent inquiries to 31 stations and expects to contact more.

Officials have not yet determined that these stations broke the law.

What This Means for CDL Drivers

A 41-cent difference per gallon can mean serious savings when filling a semi-truck.

If you buy 150 gallons of diesel, 41 cents per gallon equals $61.50.

Drivers who believe a station is not passing along the savings can report it at ncdoj.gov/ncfuelcheck or call 1-877-5-NO-SCAM.

Keep your receipt and a photo of the posted fuel price.
