Research Finds Most ELDs Share Technology With Other Brands

Your ELD may not be as unique as its brand name suggests.
New research presented by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association found extensive use of white-label technology among ELDs listed in the FMCSA registry. Researchers analyzed more than 1,000 registered devices.
More than half of registered ELDs were found to support white-label hardware, while roughly three-quarters of the devices examined used white-label software. That means ELDs sold under different brand names may share the same underlying technology.
White-labeling itself does not mean an ELD is unsafe or noncompliant. But researchers warn that a security or compliance problem in shared software, firmware or infrastructure could potentially affect multiple ELD brands at once.
