Police to Check Truck Chains on I-90

Truck drivers crossing Snoqualmie Pass in Washington should be ready for extra inspections.

On November 2, 2026, Washington State Patrol announced a special two-day enforcement operation for commercial trucks.

Troopers will check trucks on November 3 and 4 to make sure drivers are carrying the required tire chains.

Washington requires commercial vehicles over 10,000 pounds GVWR to carry enough chains on designated mountain routes from November 1 through April 1.

On I-90, this requirement applies between North Bend (milepost 32) and Ellensburg (milepost 101).

Police say the goal is to educate drivers and enforce winter chain requirements.

What This Means for CDL Drivers

If you're driving a semi-truck across Snoqualmie Pass, check your tire chains before the trip.

Make sure you have the correct number of chains for your truck and trailer.

Carrying chains does not mean you must install them at all times. Installation depends on posted road restrictions and conditions.
