Fake Trucking Accounts Used to Steal $3.5 Million From Amazon Logistics

A Connecticut man was sentenced to 24 months in federal prison on October 7 for defrauding Amazon Logistics of more than $3.5 million through fake trucking company accounts.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the man registered 23 trucking businesses with Amazon Logistics. Some accounts used false company names, while others used the names and identifying information of legitimate transportation companies without their permission.

Between December 2019 and February 2021, he accepted more than 1,000 transportation assignments and manipulated Amazon's logistics system to make it appear that trailer movements had been completed. He then submitted invoices and received payments for work that was never performed.

The court ordered him to repay $3,547,090.93 and imposed three years of supervised release following his prison sentence. The FBI investigated the case with assistance from Amazon. The case highlights the risks of trucking identity theft and fraudulent carrier accounts.
