I-70 in Kansas City to Close for 11 Months Starting January 2027

The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) has confirmed that a major section of Interstate 70 in Kansas City will close in both directions for approximately 11 months, beginning January 11, 2027, weather permitting.
The closure will affect I-70 between The Paseo and Van Brunt Boulevard. The shutdown is part of the $237 million Improve I-70 Kansas City project, which includes replacing aging bridges, rebuilding sections of the highway and adding an eastbound traffic lane.
Truck drivers traveling through Kansas City will need to plan alternate routes. MoDOT recommends using I-435 and I-470 to bypass the closure to the south. Other alternatives include I-35, I-29, I-635 and US-71, depending on the destination.
The closure is expected to last until December 2027. Drivers should check MoDOT traffic updates before traveling through the area, as construction schedules and traffic conditions may change.
