How to prepare for a DOT medical examination, find a certified examiner, and avoid preventable certification delays.
Use a certified medical examiner
Search the FMCSA National Registry and confirm the examiner is currently listed. Bring identification, medication information, glasses or hearing aids, and relevant treatment records.
Prepare accurate health information
List prescriptions, surgeries, sleep-apnea treatment, cardiovascular history, diabetes care, and other conditions honestly. Missing records often cause delays that preparation can prevent.
Certification length varies
A medical certificate may be issued for up to 24 months, but an examiner can choose a shorter period when monitoring is needed. Some conditions require additional federal documentation or exemptions.
File it with the right agency
Follow your state driver licensing agency's medical-certification process and deadlines. Keep copies and verify the updated status instead of assuming submission completed the record.
